Attendance & Make-ups In order to get the most out of your lessons regular attendance is absolutely necessary. If you must miss a lesson, please call or email 24 hours ahead of time and the lesson will be considered excused. You may reschedule two excused absences per term. If you miss a lesson without calling or emailing within 24 hours, that lesson will be considered unexcused and will not be made up. Practice Practice makes perfect! Like anything else you try to learn, daily practice is essential. And like any other subject of study, cramming does not work. Each student will have a practice record along with all other materials and will log a prescribed number of practice minutes per week. In some cases parents may be asked to sign the practice record if practice requirements are not being met. Practice Instrument Each student must have a piano on which to practice regularly. Acoustic pianos and digital pianos (with 88 keys and a weighted action) are acceptable. Portable keyboards with fewer than 88 keys are not acceptable as they lead to problems with technique and posture. Payment Payment is due in full along with the registration form. Registration forms without payment will not be processed and no lesson time will be scheduled. If full payment creates financial hardship, please call or email to discuss a payment plan. Payments are non-refundable. Materials Books, flashcards, metronomes or other materials may need to be purchased at the beginning of the term. Added purchases may also need to be made throughout the term depending upon one’s rate of progress or a change in the curriculum. All required materials are provided to you at retail cost during the lesson. Inclement Weather School closings determine lesson cancellations. Performances All students (except theory) are required to participate in the May recital and one studio class per semester. Participation in other recitals or contests is not required, but encouraged. DRESS CODE FOR BOYS: Dress shirt and tie, dress pants (khakis or cargos are fine, but no shorts), dress shoes (no tennis shoes). DRESS CODE FOR GIRLS: Dressy blouse, dress pants (no shorts) or skirt (below the knees), dress shoes (no tennis shoes or flip-flops). Studio Classes What is the purpose of having students participate in these classes? Studio classes are not only another opportunity for public performance. They are a chance to receive positive feedback and helpful suggestions from peers, to give objective advice as if the student were the teacher, and to share with other students any concerns about performance anxiety or learning issues. Most importantly, these classes are an opportunity to be reminded that, as soloists, we are not alone in piano study. We are a part of a body of students who can learn from each other’s successes as well as mistakes. In short, the teacher is not the only teacher. Are these classes required? Yes, for K-12. Participation in at least one studio class is required per fall and spring semester. What is expected of students in preparation for a studio class? Students must prepare at least one piece of music to perform for the studio class. It must be a piece recently learned which provides adequate challenge, and it must be memorized. Students must also be prepared to teach the rest of the class interesting facts about the composer and the piece itself. |
